Artist of the Week: Sunset Neon’s Reflection
In the final installment for Artist of the Week, Sunset Neon reflects on making his current project. Read the reflection below:
Seeing as how making this record was a fun bit of diving through the nostalgia of loving late night 80s b-movies in earnest, and aiming to make the long-worn cassette soundtrack to one that never existed, this seems like a good opportunity to encourage you to just create what you like, and by any means necessary.
I already go pretty genre-hopping crazy with my other project, Blue Stahli, but Sunset Neon was a chance to just revel in making songs that didn’t really fit anywhere else and all felt like they lived on the same beat up VHS tape. It’s the fastest record to come together for me, and I had some of the most fun putting it together. This album was also an experiment in deliberately changing up my typical production habits, not overthinking every little thing or trying to find 20 alternate options for a drum pattern when the first was just fine, and basically just getting out of my own way. I feel like this helped crack a code in approaching my other productions and was an excellent lesson in just creating and experimenting for the sake of doing so. Those ideas floating around in your head that never really had the right outlet, that weird stuff is just as valid. Throw ’em all together and make “that” project the outlet. Hell, use their creation as an exercise to try new stuff and explore outside of your usual medium. Chances are, you’ll learn new approaches to apply to everything else you do, and have a lot of fun doing it. Go create right the hell now!
