Throwback Thursday: Back to Black

Beyond The Stage

This month 11 years ago, Amy Winehouse released her second and final album, Back to Black in the United States, after its British release in 2006. The very next week, it landed in the Billboard charts at #7, later rising up to the #2 spot. The following year, Winehouse won five Grammy Awards for the album, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year for the single, “Rehab.”  Winehouse herself was also presented with the Grammy for Best New Artist. 

Back to Black has had a major impact on the music industry. Since its release, record labels have been seeking out female artists with a similar sound to Winehouse. Artists like Duffy, Adele, Florence and the Machine, La Roux and Ellie Goulding are all examples of the raw, experimental sound inspired by Amy Winehouse. In addition to her musical style, Amy Winehouse was also influential through her fearless, eccentric attitude and fashion choices. Although her body of work was unfortunately small, her influence on popular culture was anything but.
