Get to Know: Corusco

Get to know Corusco, an indie-rock group from Texas. They tell us all about their debut album, Wake, their very first concert and how they came up with their band name. Check it out below:

1. How and when did the band start?

A: Corusco was originally a handful of songs on an acoustic guitar in

the spring of 2015. I went on an acoustic tour that August by myself,

but I knew the songs needed a full arrangement. I knew the guys from

the local music scene, so we all just kind of fell together eventually

and accidentally became a real band.

2. How would you describe your sound?

C: We like to describe ourselves as a loud indie band. We have the

washy guitars that are generally associated with the indie genre, but

we also are influenced by the heavier bands we grew up listening to.

3. Listening to your song “New Year” off your upcoming album Wake, the

lyrics really got us hooked. Can you tell us a little bit about that

song?

A: It’s a silly love song about a first kiss. It was one of those

rare, cinematic moments in life. I couldn’t help but write that

memory into a song. The music video is really special because it

almost perfectly captures the magic from that night.

C: I like that you can hear the tension in the song. It’s the first

song we recorded and there was that uncertainty of how everything was

going to sound and feel when it was all done.

P: We wanted the lights in the music video to convey a kind of feeling

like fireworks. They take you by surprise when they explode on, and

it’s kind of

4. Tell us a little bit about your album, Wake.

P: To me, this album represents two years of trial and error. These

songs have changed so much over the time we’ve been working on them.

It’s great to have it come together after so much time. I’m really

proud of it.

A: Wake is a straight-up, loud, rock record. I’m really proud of the

way it turned out and how the songs came together. When I set out

writing the lyrics, I wanted to create a set of songs that were

connected in some way. There are sister-songs on this record that tell

different parts of a story. New Year, for example, is a story about

falling in love. The following song, Better Off, is about how I messed

that relationship up. Daughter & Stranger are both about my mother and

grandfather. And the song “Wake” is the conclusion to “Burn out

Loud” from our first EP.

5. What are your plans for the rest of 2018?

P: We’re planning on going on a tour in mid-August, and hopefully

something later in the year. Hopefully, we can hit cities from coast to

coast, but we’re definitely going to

6. What was the first concert you ever attended?

C: I grew up in a punk scene in Del Rio, and some high school friends

put together a show for LoveHateHero between their Warped dates. I had

no idea people could be that good at music. Also, the bassist stepped

on my hand at one point.

P: Warped Tour 2003. I saw Blink 182, Sum 41, All American Rejects,

Thrice, Saves the day, Thursday. That show is essentially what made me

want to be in a band. It was also the first time I ever saw someone

playing a Gibson Grabber…a guitar I now own. Als,o it was hot as

hell.

7. What is your current guilty pleasure song?

P: “Renegade” by Styx. I’ve always loved that song. It reminds

me of playing football in my friend’s game room. For a long time, all

he had were his dad’s CDs.

A: I’m really digging “Getaway Car” by Taylor Swift. A friend

put it on a group playlist, and I just got used to it and eventually

came to love it. It’s such a great jam.

C: I don’t really feel guilty about anything I listen to but I’ve

been into “24K Magic” by Bruno Mars lately.

8. If you weren’t in a band, what do you think your job would be?

C: I’d probably be a mechanical engineer…somewhere. It’s what I

got my degree in, and I briefly worked for a firm in Mexico.

A: By day, I’m a graphic designer at a creative agency. It’s

honestly the best job I’ve ever had. If I wasn’t doing this, I’d

be diving headfirst into that career path. Because obviously this

philosophy degree isn’t gonna do me any good.

P: I’d love to work in the front office for a sports team. Obviously

the Texas Rangers.

9. What are some of your musical and nonmusical influences?

A: My dad raised me on everything from Boston to Foo Fighters to

Wallfowers to Miles Davis. I was super into Nsync, when I was a kid,

too. It was weird. I find a lot of inspiration in books and

literature. There’s a song on the new record inspired by “The Raw

Shark Texts” by Steven Hall, and one named after Walt Whitman’s

“Leaves of Grass”.

C: a TON of K-Pop…not really. Musically, I learned to play drums by

listening to Silverstein, Hawthorne Heights, etc. When I started

figuring things out, I backtracked and went back to Bonham. Non-

musically, I’m definitely inspired by Buc-ee’s. It’s a gas

station in Texas. You should look it up. It’s wild.

P: I’m inspired by going to see bands live, seeing them as musicians

and performers. I love seeing what kind of gear bands use, different

genres and how all of that works together. I am super interested in

food and all of the ways people get creative with cooking. And Taco

Bueno.

10. How did you come up with the band name Corusco?

A: A few friends of mine took a roadtrip to watch the sun come up over

Galveston Bay a few years ago. I wrote a poem about that moment, and

it ended up becoming a song. I remember the way that the waves hit the

water and the way the sun made me feel. I searched for the words to

explain the contentment and unease of that morning. The lack of sleep

and the warmth of being with people I cared about. That’s how I found

the word “coruscate”. Wasn’t a far jump from there.
