PHOTOS: Thundercat – Santa Ana, CA – 03/08/20

A week into the North American leg of their Spring 2020 tour, Thundercat took the Observatory stage in Santa Ana, CA with keyboardist Dennis Hamm and drummer Justin Brown… and they absolutely blew the roof off.

The trio opened their set with “Lost in Space / Great Scott / 22-26” off of Thundercat’s highly anticipated album, It is What It Is. Thundercat followed with one of his classics, “Captain Stupido”. The trio’s set featured favorite many throwbacks and a handful of brand new songs featured off of the upcoming record.

The audience bopped their heads back-and-forth with Thundercat as he ripped on his 6-string monster of a bass guitar. The chemistry between the band members, Dennis, and Justin was felt throughout the entire venue. They were locked in with each other’s rhythms and played every song with immaculate precision.

Throughout the evening, Thundercat paid tribute and dedicated the set to his late friend, Mac Miller, who passed away in September 2018. Everyone threw their hands up in peace signs while Thundercat surprised the audience with the iconic riff he’s featured playing on Mac Miller’s song “What’s The Use?” from Mac’s 2018 release, Swimming.

The trio closed their set with Thundercat’s hit, “Them Changes”, followed by another soon be released song, “Black Qualls” (feat. Steve Lacy, Steve Arrington, and Flying Lotus) to end the night.

Last week Thundercat announced the cancellation of the rest of his Spring 2020 Tour.
