The Strokes release a new video for “The Adults Are Talking”

The Strokes shared the latest music video for “The Adults Are Talking” off of the album The New Abnormal — the American rock band’s sixth studio album. The visuals depict the band members facing off against a team of robots in a game of baseball, making for a very interesting matchup. The video is available for viewing below.

The band decided to partner with director Roman Coppola, who is no stranger to working with the Manhattan-based band, having directed multiple videos for The Strokes’ Is This It album — namely “Last Nite,” “Someday,” “The Modern Age” and “Hard to Explain” which was co-directed with Johannes Gamble and frontman Julian Casablancas.

The entire video, as mentioned above, is the story of the band members taking on a team of robots in a game of baseball — not something we expected to see upon first hearing the song when it released in April 2020.

There is a lot of tension mixed into the arc of the game that the audience is led through. After a series of swings and misses by the band while batting and a number of hits and runs scored by team robot during the band’s pitching, there finally seems to be a bit of reprieve for The Strokes. A final moment of drama that might swing fortunes.

During the game of baseball, the audience also gets different scenes mixed in that depict the other skills that the robots possess. We get to see a robot boxing with a human in one clip while in the next there’s another robot playing tennis, with the final cut scene showing a robot hand applying garnish to a sushi roll — depicting the delicate touch of its hand and creating a dichotomy by comparing it to the roughness and strength needed for sports and showcasing the vast array of skills a robot can possess.

Going back to the end of the arc of the baseball game, Casablancas finally gets on base after getting hit by a ball. He then breaks into a mad dash for the home base after the next hit and ends up securing The Strokes’ first and only run. The entire team celebrates the run as if they just won the World Series. The sun rises, flooding the field with light. Champagne flows freely as the team celebrates. The camera pans to the scoreboard. The final score? 1-56.

The Strokes released The New Abnormal — the band’s sixth album and first in seven years back in April. They performed recently on “Saturday Night Live,” playing “The Adults Are Talking” and “Bad Decisions.” They released the video for The New Abnormal track “Ode to the Mets” in July.
