Years & Years’ Olly Alexander Releases Gaga Cover
Years and Years singer Olly Alexander recently dropped his cover of the iconic Lady Gaga song “The Edge of Glory.” The song, notable for the amount of times the word “edge” appears throughout, was originally released on Gaga’s second album, Born This Way.
Alexander rose to prominence as a member of the band Years and Years with the song “King.” As of 2021, Years and Years the band has dissolved and is now Alexander’s solo project. Years and Years’ most recent release as a solo act is the single “Starstruck.”
Alexander’s re-do is not only just in time for the end of Pride but joins a slew of other covers from the Born This Way era. In honor of the seminal album’s ten-year anniversary, there will be six songs re-released, each covered by queer artists or allies. The project is titled Born This Way: Reimagined; Alexander’s is the fourth cover to drop.
Alongside “The Edge of Glory,” the three other songs and the known cover artists to be revealed are: “Judas” by Big Freedia, “Marry The Night” by Kylie Minogue and “Born This Way” sung by Orville Peck. The last two songs getting the cover treatment are “Highway Unicorn (Road to Love)” and “Yoü and I” by unannounced artists.
Each cover artist brings their own artistic flair to the song. Kylie Minogue turns Gaga disco, Orville Peck’s “Born This Way” becomes a country song, Big Freedia raps in “Judas” and Alexander brings his electro-pop sound to “The Edge of Glory.” The project is an appreciation for both Gaga and the Born This Way album, and demonstrates the influence and impact the album has carried for the past decade.
