Rising Pop Star Zolita Gifts Fans with Remix and Acoustic Versions of “Somebody I Fucked Once”
Zolita, like the character she portrays in the music video for her song “Somebody I Fucked Once,” is a bit of an it-girl at the moment. “Somebody I Fucked Once” has reached viral status with over 115 million global streams, and its aforementioned music video (self-directed and edited!) has over a whopping 20 million views. The music video is a tale as old as time, depicting Zolita as a girly-girl cheerleader who falls for the “tough guy.” However, in this version, that archetypal man is replaced with a woman.
Perhaps this is what makes Zolita so sensational. By representing and normalizing queerness, the singer accomplishes two seemingly paradoxical things: She allows queer youth to see themselves in traditionally heterosexual narratives, and because of this queering of tradition, she tells a story not told before. Equipped with a killer, commanding voice, deft lyrics and a vision to tie all of her talents together, Zolita is nothing less than a gift to pop music—and is shows, as she’s been recognized by the likes of Billboard, Paper Magazine, and Dazed.
Of course, Zolita knows she has her fans to thanks for her success. As a little thank you for their support, the singer recently dropped “Somebody I Fucked Once (The Extras), two re-worked versions of the song. The first is a delightful remix by Lady Bee, the second is a stripped-down acoustic rendition beautifully sung and strummed. If these versions are described as gifts to her fans, then the only reasonable response is thank you.
