Fresh off the release of her debut studio album I Can’t Let Go, Suki Waterhouse brought the second stop of her four-night tour to a sold-out Cafe Du Nord in San Francisco last weekend.

Waterhouse took the stage to uproarious applause, with feverish fans packing the small dance floor in hopes of closing the gap between them and their idol. She kicked off the set with compulsively danceable “Bullshit on the Internet” and sultry “Devil I Know.” Though both songs were off the album she released only one day prior, many audience members sang along to each word, a testament to the dedication of her loyal listeners.

suki waterhouse beyond the stage magazine pics by dana 1Though much of the set was dedicated to her new album, Waterhouse included old favorites like the upbeat croon of “Johanna” and stripped-down “Brutally.” One of the night’s gems was Waterhouse’s rendition of Kim Carnes’s “Bette Davis Eye.” The ’80s classic gave the English singer a chance to showcase her playful stage presence and interact with the crowd. Yet the clear fan favorite was “Good Looking,” the cinematic, shimmering single that has become her most popular since its release in 2017.

Witnessing Waterhouse perform to a 250-capacity venue felt uniquely ephemeral; the intimacy and vulnerability of the performance were unexpected surprises alongside the effortless star power that she exudes. Amidst the soaring synths and driving rhythms, Waterhouse’s soulful delivery and understated charm gripped the audience in euphoric hypnosis. Each person in attendance was acutely aware of their luck to experience a performer so clearly destined for stardom on a small club stage.

Suki Waterhouse may be known for her success in the modeling and acting realms, but her performance in this tiny San Francisco club has solidified her well-deserved status as a quickly rising musical phenom.
