The Grammys Switch to Online Voting & Update Rules

After reviewing the rules and regulations for the Grammy Awards, The Recording Academy has decided to switch to online voting and update some of the existing awards rules.

This year, the 13,000 voting members will cast their Grammy Awards votes online instead of by paper ballots. This switch will give greater access and flexibility to voters, as well as provide more accurate and representative results. The Latin Grammys already made the transition to online voting last year, and it seems to be the right choice.

Another major change is that songwriters will now be able to participate in the Album of the Year category. Previously, this category only recognized artists, producers and engineers, but now any music creator with at least 33 percent playing time on the album will be eligible for nomination.

The Recording Academy will also implement nomination review committees for the Rap, Contemporary Instrumental, and New Age genres. These committees will serve as another form of checks and balances to prevent popularity bias and allow lesser-known rising artists to be recognized as well.

Voting will begin this fall and the nominees will be announced November 28. The 60th Grammy Awards will be held at Madison Square Garden in New York City on January 28, 2018.
