Alt-R&B artist KaEl released his new single “Add It Up” with a lyric video earlier today. The track shares a story of a relationship that has reached its breaking point, a tale of late night betrayal and the transgressions of a relationship lacking trust.

The 20-year-old Brooklyn native headed to Atlanta to create this track that reminds listeners of a mixture of Popcaan and 6lack. It reels in listeners with its sparse dancehall beat with ethereal keys and driving drum pattern reminiscent of the Island/East African pop that has been thriving back home in Brooklyn.

“Add It Up” comes months after the release of KaEl’s single “LondonTowne” which was released in December. Harvesting a more contemporary R&B sound, the song captures his impressive vocal range, evoking thoughts of artists like Daniel Caesar.

The juxtaposing singles showcase the immense array of talent that KaEl is ready to share with the world, as he prepares to move to Atlanta to make music full-time following his graduation from Hampton University’s Computer Science Program this May.

Some of his earliest musical influences range from Drake, Beyoncé, to Chris Brown, and he has found more recent influence in artists such as Khalid, Giveon, 6lack, and H.E.R. Elements of alt-R&B with hints of bedroom pop and hip-hop come together to make an introspective, heavy-hearted, sensual sound that often finds its lyrical and stylistic home in themes of love and nostalgia.

KaEl is an artist to follow as his music has the ability to appeal to fans of all genres and be there for listeners in the midst of feelings of melancholy, warmth, and longing.
