Indie pop darlings The Marias brought their Cinema tour to the Fox Theatre in Oakland, CA to a positively hypnotized sold-out crowd earlier this month.

The LA-based group defies classification, but can be most easily summarized as sonically intoxicating. Drawing on jazz, psychedelic, and funk inspiration, everything about The Marias drips with irresistible charm.

The band’s stage setup matched their other-worldly aura, with a large platform doorway and gauzy curtains decorating the stage. On tour, founding members Maria Zardoya and Josh Conway are joined by friends Jesse Perlman, Edward James, and Gabe Steiner. The individual talent each musician brings to the stage is magnified by their personal connections with one another, creating an onstage presence that welcomes the audience into the ease of the friendship.

The band made their eager fans wait until the final song of the encore to play smash hit “Cariño,” yet kept the crowd entranced throughout the set with renditions like the biting “Calling U Back” and dreamy “Over the Moon.” One of the night’s favorites, “Clueless,” had the audience wrapped in a haze of the deliciously funk-inspired arrangement.

This tour may have wrapped, but every element from the group’s seductive energy to their captivating musicianship, we cannot wait to see what The Marias have in store for us next.
