Known for indie rock band The Dear Hunter, Casey Crescenzo is branching out on his own with new solo project Honorary Astronaut. The new project includes a 5-track EP released this past week.
The opening song of the EP, “E.K.E.” is completely etherial sounding and also a bit psychedelic. This track eases the listener into the concept to come and the world of sound Crescenzo pursues with the rest of the album. “Gold” picks up the pace and tells a failed love story. Keeping with the same theme, “Love! Or, the Beast That Looks Like It” is a ballad with amazing sounding harmonies. The single “Final Dream Machine” was released for fans in August as a preview of what was coming. The song already showed a slightly different side with its introspective and deeply personal lyrics.
Fans of The Dear Hunter should not worry though, as Crescenzo has said that this is not a replacement for the band, but an additional creative outlet with the extra time 2020 has offered him. Here is his statement on how Honorary Astronaut came to be:
“I made a thing that isn’t The Dear Hunter. Don’t fret, though. I can explain. While I have been diligently at work on the newest TDH project(s), it became clear earlier this year that we would need to rethink the schedule we had in place. While this offered additional time to craft and nurture these projects, it also meant more time to spend within a holding pattern, surrounded by unfinished art. This feeling is difficult for me to cope with, as I had grown accustomed to the consistency of releasing new music every 1-2 years. The gestation period for this current project was already uncharacteristically long, due to a number of reasons, but the addition of this indeterminate state of suspended animation wore on me, and I felt a stir-craziness that could only really be satiated by seeing something, no matter how small, through from inception to completion. Enter Honorary Astronaut.”
