REVIEW: Henry Jamison 2018 Tour
“I’m changing the band name to ‘Henry Jamison and the Maple Shape’ tonight.” Cue an explosion of laughter from the stage and an uncertain, yet accepting nod from the crowd. There’s beauty in curiosity, simplicity, and comfort: an atmosphere the band creates naturally.
We were lucky enough to catch Henry Jamison’s set last night at Johnny Brenda’s in Philadelphia—and what a night of feeling it was.
From anecdotes of lost guitars (multiple guitars in multiple cities, we should add) to the lyrics in each song, Henry is a storyteller at heart. To put it simply, he writes pure poetry. Every word paints a scene where you look to the right and your soulmate is standing on the other side of the crowd, making eyes at you. You see it in the emotion on his face, eyes closed and focused. You feel it in the soft, yet perfectly placed string arrangement. From the dim stage lights to the softness of his voice, Henry’s music puts you in a state of ease.
To grasp the attention of an entire room is a talent in itself, and Henry aced it—most notably with “Real Peach.” Scanning the crowd, you saw smiles and lit up faces, kisses to lovers, and singing and swaying. It was obvious the song is a soundtrack of memories for different people, for different reasons. It was a gathering of friends that you haven’t seen in a while, but pick up right where you left off.
