New Music Friday: Albums You Must Hear For Oct. 21, 2022

All hail Friday October 21, 2022. It’s perhaps the most rewarding and most new music-filled Friday this year. Consider it a super new music Friday. There are full-length releases from unshakable legends and budding superstars alike. Whether you’ve waited half a decade or just a few months for these musicians to unveil new tunes, there are a plethora of soundtracks to graciously carry you into the weekend.

Taylor Swift – Midnights

Swifties can let out a sigh of relief now that one of the world’s most dominant performers in recent memory has released another studio album, Midnights. Fans awoke to a brand new music video accompanying “Anti-Hero” and finally got their ears on the highly anticipated tune “Snow On The Beach” featuring Lana Del Ray.

Arctic Monkeys – The Car

The Car is Arctic Monkeys’ seventh complete LP, but only their second since 2013’s wildly popular AM shot them to superstar status. This record is a far cry from the rocking sounds of the past. Instead–it’s rewarding in a new and more captivating way. Orchestral strings sweeten frontman Alex Turner’s vocals at their very best. Not since Radiohead has a rock band been able to release whatever sort of record they please and everyone nods in one conclusive thought of “this is great.”

Carly Rae Jepsen – The Loneliest Time

Another delivery from one of pop’s most candid figures. Jepsen sings about the worst lovers imaginable, ranging from a sweet mama’s boy to a suspected serial killer who is already married. There’s something here for everyone and the sound has spurts of multiple genres and themes.

Tegan and Sara – Crybaby

These twin sisters have been through two storied decades and ten albums together and now we’ve made it to a record that’s a hillier roller coaster than the time this duo took acid at a 90’s warehouse rave. Sure, Tegan and Sara have been on some crazy journies, but as always, they invite fans to stomp their feet to synths and this time we even hear the personal details of their own relationship.

Dry Cleaning – Stumpwork

Florence Shaw’s vocals are downright freaky. Matched with random lyrics she penned while overhearing stranger’s conversations and the noise rock of talented gearheads behind her, the group’s sophomore album delivers and allows the instrumentation to breathe more than 2021’s New Long Leg. It’s dancier, groovier and they’ve brought a whistle this time.

A Boogie wit da Hoodie – Take Shots (feat. Tory Lanez)

Another collaboration release from the New York rapper’s vault, here’s another track for hip-hop lovers.

Babyface – Liquor (feat. Ari Lennox)

A breath of fresh air from Ari Lennox carrying the chorus and Babyface’s as-advertised tone makes this slow song you’ll hear at the club this weekend.
