New Music Friday – October 10, 2025

It’s New Music Friday. Read on to view a complete list of top singles, EPs and albums out now. First, here’s a closer look at one of the week’s best new releases.

The Best of New Music Friday:

Jay Som – Belong

Jay Som

For the unacquainted, Jay Som is someone that many modern alternative rock bands admire. What Jay Som hasn’t achieved in mainstream hits, she has instead accomplished in artistry and musicianship. Jay Som has made the studio her sanctuary, using thunderous bass lines, noisy guitar effects and raw, stripped back drums to create mesmerizing and multidimensional dream pop tracks. Jay Som is someone your coolest high school listened to ten years ago. Jay Som is someone you better listen to now if you ever want to be that cool. To become that wicked and sick, spin her new, super approachable and smile-inducing LP Belong.

Belong is a record that listeners can jump right into. Jay Som collaborates with Mini Trees and Jim Adkins at the beginning of this album, giving a sweet taste of those jangly charms she’s built a career off of. These are tracks that should be listened to on a good pair of headphones, so every squeak of a strumming guitar and rattle of a snare drum can be heard. Play it loud.

On “Appointment,” the first track from this LP Jay Som performs on her own, she utilizes double vocal effects to emphasize emotion. There are some high pitched keys lingering in the background. This track, along with several others on Belong, feel like they take place in a dream, creating the sort of fuzzy feeling you get when you lay on your arm for too long.

Paramore’s Hayley Williams stops by to make an appearance on the song “Past Lives,” where the two duet on the chorus, talking in short one thought lines. “It’s falling apart // Shut down and restart // Melt off, defrost // I’m spiraling up.” It’s a powerful track, and the most anthemic song on the album.

Jay Som has created a bright and clear production. Six years since her last album, she can still kick up a piercing pop din, less muffled with digital distortion and much more spirited with passion. Belong is a record that rocks, pushing towards numerous little narratives. On an album about love, self, and endless big and little ideas, there is an experience here for anyone willing to listen (with a quality pair of headphones, of course).
