AJR went out of 2020 with a “Bang!” and are back with new music that will boost your mood, just a little bit, after the year we’ve had. The band dropped “Way Less Sad” this past week and we can definitely relate.
The new track is the latest single off their upcoming OK Orchestra album set to drop March 26. “Way Less Sad” is that song revealing sad, but improving, emotions disguised in the well-known up-tempo, piano and trumpet-filled AJR beats. Following their singles “Bummerland,” “My Play” and monumental hit “Bang!” which marked their first Top 10 entry on the Billboard Hot 100, gained over 350 million streams and is fast-approaching a double platinum certification. The single touches on mental health as Jack justifies the idea of telling yourself you’ll be okay, while you actually aren’t but enjoying the happy times you do feel in the moment.
Lyrics to the single were teased in a Twitter post back in January along with a snippet Feb. 7 announcing a single on the way.

Of course, it wouldn’t be an AJR song without a little reference from one of their other songs as the alt-pop band hint at their song “Three-Thirty,” another track that recounts mental health issues, while singing “Cause it’s half past three and my brain is on fire.” The easter egg is also confined in the “Way Less Sad” music video when the time on the clock is set at 3:30 and found in the background of the “Bang!” cover art.
The trio of brothers last Billboard charting album Neotheater was another major push in their music, covering a vast amount of topics but perfectly reflecting on the good and bad in life, and overall theme of growth, as they continue this journey with OK Orchestra.
