While summer provides some extra time for time outside, socializing and traveling for us college students, it also lends itself to time for reflection. Topics like identity and mental health set to dreamy guitar chords and other instrumentals create the perfect tracks for thinking about life. And these talented artists know how to write thought-provoking lyrics, too.

  1. “These Days” by Tems

The title of this Tems track tells you everything you need to know about it. Tems’ strong vocals are empowering throughout the song, from in the background in the intro to carrying us through the chorus.

2. “Demi Moore” by Phoebe Bridgers

I promise this is the saddest one on the list. The spooky song takes place during a bad weed high for Phoebe. The lyrics are as much about hope as they are about loneliness,  reflecting the duality of the high for her. It’s a common theme in Bridger’s discography, and we love Stranger in the Alps.

With an entire accompanying screenplay for the classic album this song appears on (Because The Internet), “I. Flight Of The Navigator” tells an entire story. Commentators stated that the song is inspired by a death that was very important to Donald Glover.

Keni can fly’s single “veering” begins with “Sometimes I just need direction”. Lyrics about loss and searching for meaning set to a melodic backtrack that slows mid-way, “veering” is perfect for your late summer nights.
