New Music Friday: January 13, 2023

The year is off to a fast start–musicians are delivering solid songs on all fronts.

Fear not on this New Music Friday the 13th. From familiar faces to fresh stars, there are plenty of stellar tracks out this week. Here are the tunes you must hear.

Genevieve Stokes – “17”

Sentimental and spiritual best describe Genevieve Stokes’ newest single. “17” is the third release in support of her forthcoming EP Catching Rabbits which is due out this spring. This song describes the forced pressures most teens face. Stokes herself said it pierces through her dark, heavy emotions. She shows it’s okay to write something helpful in response to the bad and unwanted. Stokes helps us all confront the past in this new self-soothing lullaby.

Belle and Sebastian – “Late Developers”

Scottish pop-rockers Belle and Sebastian’s surprise new album announcement this week has brought the world Late Developers. The title track and final exclamation from the group’s newest venture is a world-music-sounding song. It’s poppy for a closer with horns, flutes and an upbeat tempo. The lyrics make a promise: Belle and Sebastian won’t ever forget who you are. With another charming record, we won’t forget them either.

YOUR ANGEL – “Misbehave”

YOUR ANGEL is the project from LA singer Maddy Boyd and on “Misbehave” she contemplates everything that warms her heart about a potential lover. She sings about getting through the turning points in relationships if this person would simply let her be their baby. It’s a fresh take presenting the real moments that make falling in love among the world’s greatest pleasures. YOUR ANGEL hits on everything from figuring a person out and getting a grin about it or looking at them and realizing their gaze back at you is all you’ve ever wanted. This vocal performance is so clean that it ranks among the best of this young year.

Margo Price – “Hell In The Heartland”

Booming organs set the tone for this slow-burning song on Margo Price’s new album Strays. It’s a song fans will love and casual listeners can place on their most passionate playlists. It shows her full potential as a layered and careful songwriter. Price explores love and trouble throughout the record, getting support from featured artists Angel Olsen and Lucius on two tracks respectively. Go give this one a spin.

Julia Wolf – “Now”

On her new album Good Thing We Stayed Julia Wolf continues her pop and hip-hop journey by bringing new takes to classic genres. The record’s opener “Now” is slower than the rest of the album but sets the tone for the themes to come. Wolf isn’t afraid to tell people off but has her own insecurities to shake down too.

Which of these will you be adding to your favorite playlists today? Any we missed?
