The Best of New Music Friday:

Wet Leg – Moisturizer

Wet Leg still can’t believe they’re “here.” That’s “here” as in packing Glastonbury fairgrounds, appearing on NPR’s Tiny Desk and releasing their highly anticipated second full-length studio record Moisturizer. It’s been 4 years since the band’s first single “Chaise Lounge” opened up their world to endless possibilities and 3 years since their catchy and witty GRAMMY-winning debut self-titled record dropped. “What are we doing here?” asked singer Rhian Teasdale upon being presented with the first of the band’s two Gramophone trophies back in 2023. Now with another hook-filled and more mature sounding record under their belt, Wet Leg are clearly committed to doing well, even if they can’t fathom their own popularity. Fans who listen to one of 2025’s most exciting releases know exactly why Wet Leg are here: to bring groovy rock hits to the masses.

“Hello, 9-9-9, what’s your emergency?” asks guitarist Hester Chambers on “CPR,” which is one of the year’s most thrilling singles. “Well, the thing is, I’m in love,” answers Teasdale before the band breaks down into an upbeat instrumental bridge that sounds both like an overworked heart rate monitor and a lovesick person melting to the floor. “Call up triple 9, give me CPR,” the lyrics continue, a double entendre for both feeling so faint that resuscitation is needed, and that the song’s protagonist is so jazzed about a love interest that they need a kiss. This song takes the breath away from both its main character and fans listening to both its words and instrumentation. If Wet Leg’s festival performances are any indication, this may be one of the most exciting songs to hear live in 2025.

And while Moisturizer offers plenty of snappy lyrics that drew millions of fans to the band on their first record, namely in the form of lead single “Catch These Fists,” this is a more mature album than the band’s debut. Songs like “pokemon” are such sweet listens. “You wanna go for a drive? I don’t wanna take it slow // You wanna go for a drive? Isle of Wight to Tokyo,” sings Teasdale on this relaxing love ballad. “Your kiss is all I’ll ever need. You taste so sweet, like grenadine // You are my favourite human being,” the second verse continues. Other standout songs that show off the band’s growth include “liquidize” and penultimate track “11:21.” Fans who want serious rock will find it. “Pillow talk” is a super noisy track.

Wet Leg has been “here.” Moisturizer is one of the most easily listenable mainstream records of 2025. And while some of the group’s post-punk and pop rock contemporaries continue evolving their sounds, Wet Leg is pioneering what the genres are and can be in the modern age. Their use of studio engineering pushes their instrumentation to another level. The band’s lyrics are even more focused than on their debut, plus they touch more subjects.

Wet Leg has evolved so much from LP1 to LP2. It’s difficult to make such a grand leap across just one album. Perhaps that sort of momentous shift is exactly why the band is “here” to stay. Just like a lover, here’s to hoping Wet Leg might keep taking everyone’s breath away.
