The Best of New Music Friday:
Post Animal – IRON

Today, Joe Keery has rejoined Chicago-based psychedelic rock band Post Animal and together they’ve released a brand new album called IRON. This is the first time all six original Post Animal members got in the studio together in almost a decade. Keery left the band in 2017 to focus on acting in Stranger Things. Three band members also relocated away from Chicago, while all members explored other projects and toured with various friends. Post Animal began working on IRON in 2024.
The result of this reunion is a fun and entertaining record. Lead single “Last Goodbye” is an approachable pop song that any music fan can appreciate. It’s catchy, has romantic lyrics and explores a bittersweet breakup. “It’s true, I try to love every corner of your mind // But we’ve been going off the deep end,” sing Dalton Allison and Jake Hirshland while Keery, aka Djo plays electric guitar.
But IRON is very much a psych record. If listeners give IRON a full listen, they’ll find dreamy instrumental sections and repetitive trippy moments on tracks like “Maybe You Have To,” which feels rooted in the band’s earlier records. Another single, “Pie in the Sky,” also explores the original sound, with the band singing a capella, showing Post Animal is still in the business of making very authentic projects.
At a time when the group could rely on the commercial success of Keery’s artistic career and his stadium and amphitheater filling Djo shows, the band stick to their guns. Post Animal has always been a talented rock group and they stay true to themselves here. IRON is a fun album, with an extra little dose of happiness, as fans can know the band is back together in its original form and making the sort of music they’ve become acclaimed for.
Indigo De Souza – Precipice

Indigo De Souza has become an indie role model this past decade. Her latest album Precipice, also her first record in two years, almost feels like a roller coaster ride. The singles are thrilling, and the LP is an emotional jolt from start to finish.
Single “Heartthrob” is a song that conflicts itself in sound and words. While the bass and drums create a rumbling and fast-paced rhythm section, De Souza draws out her words. “When you’re going and the going gets hard // Click your heels and feel my love // Bounce house baby, we’re so proud of you // Hands together, give it up,” she sings with an elongated expression. But then, she speeds up her vocals to match the instrumentation. “I really put my back into it,” she shouts on repeat during the chorus. “Heartthrob” is a joy to listen to, evoking many emotions along the way. It’s a contender for indie’s underground song of the summer.
Other songs like “Clean it Up” remain slow, really leaning into the synthesizers that this whole album is centered around. The LP, by the way, brought new creative ideas and challenges into the mix. De Souza took on blind studio sessions in Los Angeles while recording Precipice.
“I’d been wanting to work on more pop-leaning music for a while, so when I came out to LA, I made sure to meet with people that could help bring that to life,” said De Souza. “I wanted to make music that could fill your heart with euphoria while you dance along.”
Mission accomplished.
