New Music Friday – June 14, 2024

Surf punk is back, Normani’s first full-length solo album is finally here and Cola continues to be popular among indie rock fans. It’s New Music Friday. Let’s talk about these suggested new releases and more.

The Best of New Music Friday:

FIDLAR – “FIX ME” / “GET OFF MY WAVE”

FIDLAR

FIDLAR’s grand return to the surf punk scene was one of the most circulated moments in music this week. Instagram stories were filled with a billion captions along the lines of “FIDLAR is back, OMG!” That’s because the band shared its plans to release their fourth album SURVIVING THE DREAM. It’ll be their first studio LP since 2019. FIDLAR is also going on a North American tour this September and October. Releasing two new singles “FIX ME” and “GET OFF MY WAVE” were the cherries fans begged to go on top.

“FIX ME” starts with a series of underwater electro beeps and boops before wrangling into a slow build. “Cause I’m type of crazy that’s not the cute type // No I get high or I’m gonna die” singer Zac Carper whimpers before a classic punk rock rush breaks out and the song finds its footing in a fast pace. It’s a whiplash-filled listen. “FIX ME” comes with a music video featuring actress Sosie Bacon performing karaoke.

“GET OFF MY WAVE” is another raucous ruckus that opens with feedback noise and a drumroll. There’s a screeching undertone of guitars before Carper sings with an echo in his vocals. Drummer Max Kuehn drops a foot-stomping beat between Carper’s voice and the listener’s ears.

FIDLAR laid down their new songs at Balboa Recording Studio in East Los Angeles. It’s a storied studio where other rock acts like Meatbodies, Mannequin Pussy, Big Thief, The Regrettes and White Reaper all put their tracks to tape.

It’s clear FIDLAR’s combining their punk talents (that’s the first time that phrase has EVER been used) with a music sanctuary and looking to get as unique a sound as possible. Let “FIX ME” and “GET OFF MY WAVE” be the proof.
