New Music Friday – September 20, 2024

Today is a New Music Friday with auto-tune, electropop and DJ mixes. Scroll down to see a list of new singles and albums to check out this week. First, here’s a deeper look at one of the most discussed releases this week.

The Best of New Music Friday:

The Voidz –  Like All Before You

The Voidz NMF

It should be no surprise that the first vocal lines Julian Casablancas lays down on The Voidz new record Like All Before You are drenched in auto-tune. Casablancas previously touted that his voice is an additional instrument to the bands he plays with. That’s certainly the case on video-game-soundtrack turned band The Voidz latest record. On Casablancas’ spin-off band’s first album since 2018’s Virtue, the group duets soft ghoulish guitars and synths with quick, paranoid sounds. They deliver on a record with extreme soft tracks like “Square Wave” and the pretty futuristic sounds of “Spectral Analysis,” plus raucous tunes such as “Prophecy of the Dragon.”

Like All Before You centers around “7 Horses,” where Casablancas showcases those vocal effects that only Voidz records allow (The Strokes would probably never allow this much distortion on a single record). They’re gorgeous on some dreamy moments and over the top on others. The individual songs on this record stand well on their own. Overall though, many of the tunes are far apart on a broad spectrum with little middle ground between the slow tracks and chaotic ones. That means listening to the full album at once could be a challenge for listeners, depending on the mood they want. However, listening to The Voidz probably means someone is moody enough already.

All that’s left to do is sit back hope The Voidz put on more promotional Like All Before You shows than the three currently slated for New York City and Los Angeles. The rest of the world would really like to hear space rock from a different world, Julian.
