The Best of New Music Friday:

Geese – Getting Killed

GETTING KILLED 3000x

There’s a young rock band in New York City capturing the hearts and minds of young fans around North America and Europe. That band is Geese, and they’re talented and just slightly goofy enough to define the current alternative generation’s taste. The band’s first two records were psychedelic dreamscapes. In 2023, they shared the cult classic  concept album 3D Country, an LP focused on a drug taking cowboy wandering the desert. Now they’ve released the slightly more serious but brand evolving Getting Killed. It’s one of the year’s most anticipated rock releases. This band and their massive aura have delivered.

Getting Killed builds on some of the band’s most notable skill sets. The album’s title track uses choral vocals to drive its rhythm with a force, something Geese successfully introduced on numerous 3D Country tracks. This go-around, the band is offering a more open-ended and digestible listening experience. The common music fan can tune into Getting Killed and find something enjoyable, whereas the group’s previous album might have been from left field for people outside a certain rock subsect. By combining the excitement their dedicated fans have for them and making their latest body of work more accessible, Geese have turned things up another notch and taken their career to a new level.

One thing Geese continue capitalizing on here is their pure artistic talent. Everyone in the band has excellent musical abilities. Singer Cameron Winter has an unmatched voice (and he boosted Geese’s popularity with his late 2024 solo album of the year contender Heavy Metal). Drummer Max Bassin can be either full throttle crazy or really patient behind the kit. He knows when to play in line with the music or be a wild rock drummer. Bassist Dominic DiGesu compliments the rhythm section. Guitarist Emily Green puts the exclamation mark on the band’s psych sound. “Husbands” is a great song for those who want an all encompassing example of Geese.

The song “100 Horses” is a fun track to step along to, plus it’s filled with dynamic lyrics. In the band’s deep-rooted desire to never take themselves too seriously, Winter sings “There were 100 horses dancing, maybe 124 // All the horses must go dancing, there is only dance music in times of war,” right as the song turns into a dancey breakdown. It’s moments like these in Geese’s songs that define the band. You might grin at the first part of a verse, then you might think along to a seemingly political statement about the current evils ravaging Earth. It’ll make you want to dance along while pondering on that last verse.

Geese’s music is thoughtful more often than it’s not. There’s time to think about laughter, politics and even love. The band dares to get moody on “Au Pays du Cocaine.” They refuse to do as they’re told on “Taxes.”

Geese are on fire right now. They’re about to begin a largely sold-out North American tour and plan to be “Getting Killed” in Europe with numerous dates across the Atlantic to end the year. It’s a hot ticket–and one that shouldn’t be missed if you can help it. This is a band that has evolved over their half decade plus around. But the band is young–early 20’s young–and they’ve shown no signs of slowing down and paying their taxes anytime soon.
