On October 7th Alina Baraz took the stage at Portland’s Crystal Ballroom, and took over the city the same night. Fans sold out and packed the venue to witness the fast growing artist perform. After securing an opening spot on Coldplay’s 2017 tour, and the release of her EP The Color of You, the once hidden musical gem is now selling out her own headlining tours.
Alina Baraz is an artist worthy of the attention, and an artist destined to grow further. Her music and lyrics are hypnotic and intimate, and coupled with her soothing voice leaves the listener in a trance. The Color of You brought a new era for Baraz, bringing her closer to the modern state of pop music. This was reflected by her latest live show, as lights were heavily used throughout the set as they engulfed the artist and flashed before the audience. Baraz was joined onstage by two touring musicians, a live drummer and a keyboard/synth/bassist, who played her songs and intermissions loud and fast. Baraz further enlisted the help from Kiana Wood, a dancer, to add a final element to her live show.
Cheers and lyrics were screamed back at Baraz throughout the night. Phones and hands were constantly raised as Baraz and company successfully hyped and engaged their audience. During her old songs, including her hit “Electric”, fans softly swayed and whispered the words completely mesmerized by the artists’ performance. Though Baraz only took breaks in the set a couple times to speak to her crowd, she charmed the audience with constant and intimate eye contact, waving at fans, and leaning over to hold the hands of those in the front row.
Portland welcomed Alina Baraz into their city, and showed her all the love they could. Baraz in return gave the audience a fast paced, high energy show on a memorable night of her most special tour yet. With only two EPs out and already having a successful career, Baraz further shows more promise and potential as an artist. Fan excitement continues to grow and wonder what an official debut record from Baraz will sound like.
