Earlier this month, Portland’s Revolution Hall was graced by none other than the skinny legend herself, Trixie Mattel. Despite an early exit on season 7 of RuPaul’s Drag Race, Trixie quickly cultivated legions of diehard fans for her signature look and off-the-wall comedy. Since her appearance on the show in 2015, she’s released three folk albums, created her own makeup company, starred in the mega-successful YouTube series turned TV show “UNHhhh” with her fellow season 7 competitor Katya, won Season 3 of RuPaul’s Drag Race: All Stars, toured the world with her music and standup comedy, released a documentary, and will soon become a published author. Needless to say, she’s booked and busy.
For her “Grown Up Tour”, Trixie takes her signature musical stylings and brand of comedy and focuses on her most recent life milestone; turning 30. The show opened with a hilarious pre-recorded video of Trixie in a doctor’s office where Katya is her doctor. Hilarity ensues, and after putting the audience in stitches, Katya releases Trixie to the stage for her first song. The show bounced between Trixie singing her music live (with a three-piece band), her crude and hilarious standup routines, and pre-recorded interludes that kept the audience laughing even when Trixie wasn’t on stage.
The constant switching between raunchy humor and soaring folk anthems could’ve been jarring, but Trixie used the contrast to her advantage; like when she did her routine about her biggest celebrity crush, Jesse Eisenberg. A minute or so into the routine, Jesse Eisenberg himself appears via recorded FaceTime call, leading Trixie to sing “Jesse Jesse”, the appropriately-titled song she wrote about him. The show was filled with these sort of quirks that kept the audience guessing at every turn. From live music and comedy, to wig and outfit reveals, Trixie Mattel delivered perhaps one of the most dynamic live shows of the year, as she continues to prove why she is one of the most influential drag queens working today. Be sure to see Trixie when she stops nearby, and check out some photos from the show below!
