Glass Animals is one of those bands in an interesting position with market share on both sides of the popularity meter. Even after chalking millions of views across different platforms, the band can still be considered relatively unknown for most parts.
To get you excited for the band’s upcoming live-streamed concert, we are sharing with you our five (in no particular order) favorite Glass Animals music videos.
No doubt the song that started it all, “Gooey” was an immediate addition to this list for us. The sheer weirdness of this video, paired with the soft vocals, smooth acoustics and electronics of the song makes it quite clear why this particular song became the band’s breakthrough track way back in 2014. The video, with all of its intense close-ups, will definitely make a large portion of the viewers uncomfortable, but then again, maybe that’s the point.
“Agnes” was the band’s first venture into talking about personal stories, this one, in particular, is about a friend that Dave Bayley lost to suicide. The content of the song is extremely intense and makes a person feel all kinds of not-so-pleasant things inside their own body. To mimic the feeling that the song exudes, the band decided to film the video by putting Bayley inside a centrifuge.
The machine makes it hard to breathe and to even stay conscious. It emulates that horrible sinking feeling inside your heart that only arises with complete and overwhelming sadness. It might not be the most aesthetic or visually-appealing to watch, but it is raw in the truest sense of the word.
Bayley said it was the most intense video-making experience he will ever have, but it was the only way to even begin simulating, even for a moment, what happens within “Agnes.”
Season 2 Episode 3
“Season 2 Episode 3” was part of the 2016 album How to Be a Human Being. Definitely one of the most visually appealing videos of the lot, it features a lot of vividly-colored scenes as well as 8-bit animation sequences that extend the storyline of the song. Although released in 2016, the entire audio-video package can speak volumes about how people are living their lives in 2020 during quarantine.
“Leftover breakfast, cereal for lunch,” does not even sound that bad, to be honest. Isn’t that just what the weekend is, anyway?
The video for “Dreamland” shows the true grit of the band and Bayley. Recording and releasing an album during a pandemic is hard enough, but to make a video when no one else can help you due to social distancing is probably a tall effort in itself.
Bayley creates the entire video by himself. And when we say entire, we mean entire. He was given all the necessary equipment and instructions to build a set but he had to ultimately do it all himself. From building the set to setting up the cameras to then eventually recording the video; all while quarantining.
Don’t believe what you’re reading? Watch the video to see for yourself!
The video for “Life Itself” might be quite confusing to watch, with a lot of storylines and characters to keep up with. It incorporates characters from other songs in How to Be a Human Being, the little boy and waitress from “Youth,” the lady in white from “Poplar St.” and the guy driving the red Cadillac who is the main character for the video.
It feels like a spinoff of “Pulp Fiction,” with multiple storylines taking place at the same time, only to collide somewhere in the future. Having the man and the older lady drive down a desert road in a red convertible also screams of a “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” influence.
Having an intricate music video with a lot to unpack seems to be somewhat of a Glass Animals specialty. It would be a disservice on our part to give away much about the video as we don’t want to influence your ideas and theories. Watch it for yourself and let your imaginations run wild!
