Get To Know: Jahnah Camille
Beyond The Stage: Your new EP is called My sunny oath! Talk a bit about your excitement surrounding its release.
Jahnah Camille: It’s the final piece of releasing all my songs that were leftover from high school so I feel like moving forward in my career, everything is going to distinctly feel different. I’ve also really bridged the gap with a lot of my influences in terms of the production so it feels like a reintroduction in ways.
BTS: Are there any songs on this record you are particularly proud of?
Jahnah Camille: I’m quite proud of summer’s scorch. I wrote that one at like 6 am before going into the studio because I wanted to scrap some of the songs I had brought with me and I gave myself the challenge of writing a song with a different structure of anything else I’d written in the past. So I feel like I achieved a lot through it.
BTS: What’s your recording process like? Do you write lyrics or music first?
Jahnah Camille: I write usually all the lyrics at first and some of the music. I write on guitar most of the time so I at least have the chord progressions I want to use when I’m finished writing. Lately I’ve been writing even when I can’t get my guitar so I’m hoping that will translate to more objectivity around what I could do instead of what works in the moment so I can have a backdrop to my lyrics.
BTS: You’ve been on tour with Blondshell these past few weeks. How’d that come to be and how have you enjoyed performing your new songs live?
Jahnah Camille: I’ve loved playing the new songs live. They weren’t out for the majority of the time I’ve been playing them so it’s felt like I have a sweet little secret with everyone who comes to the shows.
BTS: Is it true you got added to a last minute house show in Portland, Oregon after one of your tour stops got cancelled?
Jahnah Camille: Yes we did! Shout out Femme Cell for adding us to the bill. Most of the time when I’m on tour, everyone at the shows only knows the people they came with so it was really cool to see an actual scene, especially in Portland. Very sweet community with very sweet music.
BTS: If your fans had to know one thing about you, what would it be?
Jahnah Camille: I’m more uncomfortable not being myself than I am pretending so what you see is really what you get.
BTS: Will there be more opportunities to see you perform live in 2025?
Jahnah Camille: Prolly.
