Kim Gordon Remakes Grammy-nominated Song “BYE BYE” with New Lyrics, Proceeds Benefit Nonprofit

Legendary artist Kim Gordon has reimagined the top hit from her latest solo record The Collective. Today, Gordon has released “BYE BYE 25!,” a new version of her Grammy-nominated song “BYE BYE,” with the lyrics changed to words that have been effectively banned or challenged from appearing in United States federal government policy by the Trump administration.

Some of the words Gordon speaks in “BYE BYE 25!” that have begun to disappear under Trump’s agenda include: advocate, climate change, female, hispanic, immigrants, intersex, male-dominated, mental health, non-conforming, trauma, uterus, victim and women. Watch the official video for “BYE BYE 25!” below.

“[Producer and collaborator] Justin Raisen had this idea to redo ‘BYE BYE’ starting at the end of the song,” Gordon said. “When I was thinking of lyric ideas, it occurred to me to use words taken from a site that had all the words that Trump has essentially banned, meaning any grant or piece of a project or proposal for research that includes any of those words would be immediately disregarded or “cancelled.” I guess Trump does believe in cancel culture, because he is literally trying to cancel culture.”

Gordon’s rework of her own song is part of a benefit for the organization NOISE FOR NOW, a group whose mission statement says they enable artists and entertainers to connect with and financially support grassroots organizations that work in the field of reproductive health, rights and justice. A t-shirt featuring the list of banned words in “BYE BYE 25!” is available on Gordon’s website, and all proceeds benefit the organization’s mission. It can be purchased here.
