The Best of New Music Friday:
Tame Impala – “Loser”

Kevin Parker announced this week that he’s finally releasing a new Tame Impala record. Deadbeat, the first Tame Impala album since 2020, will arrive on October 17. In addition to the new album announcement, Parker shared a single titled “Loser.” It’s one of 12 tracks that will appear on the upcoming LP.
Groupchats, Instagram stories and Reddit threads immediately began questioning why Parker’s latest record is called Deadbeat. A closer look at “Loser” might reveal an answer.
In the official announcement for Deadbeat, representatives for Tame Impala said that lyrically, the album follows Parker channeling an endless bummer, with words focused on self-deprecation. Musically, the record is expected to sound euphoric and encourage dancing. Deadbeat explores raving as self-enquiry and the idea of self-medicating in place of self-care.
Now think about “Loser.” Parker begins the song by singing “So much for closure, I lost composure // I get the message, I learned my lesson // Tried to correct it, I think I wrecked it // Man, it’s a crisis, I’m never like this // That’s how my life is, you couldn’t write this.”
That is a bummer, and Parker is digging hard at himself here with no goals or signs of optimism. “Fuck” is the last lyric uttered, and it’s let out as a sigh during the track’s closing seconds.
Musically, “Loser” has a groove. It’s got synths that follow a beat, choppy snares and dancy patterns. There is a four-on-the-floor element throughout the track, and it’s one of the most psychedelic sounding instrumentals Parker has laid down in a Tame Impala song in over a decade.
The provided formula for Deadbeat seems to check out. Fans will be wondering what the new Tame Impala album will sound like until its official release next month, but based on what Parker’s representatives have shared publicly, it appears that “Loser” is a solid representation of what listeners should expect.
